That may work with HL2 where Gordon already has the suit and you could have multiple people wearing the suits but in HL1 the story starts with Gordon starting work and does not have the suit on yet. They've found solutions for every potential issue you've pointed above and it's FREE: The same situation is with Half-Life 2 (and Episodes) and it's even possible to play with more than 2 Players thanks to the Synergy Team (COOP Multiplayer).
That would solve the suit problem ) But that would also mean those other players would have to stand around waiting for the main player to do certain tasks that only Gordon can do due to his suit (like the test chamber). You could have one person play Gordon and any aditional players as security guards helping him. For example, there is only one suit for one Gordon Freeman to wear and only one person is required to enter the test chamber to cause the cascade :/
